Five good things that came out of the pandemic
Is it the light at the end of the Covid-19 tunnel we see, or is there another bend around the corner? Some doctors worry about the fourth wave, caused by the Covid-19 variant raging in India.
But BC is beginning to ease the restrictions. We will be allowed to dine in at restaurants, travel beyond our health regions and see people beyond our bubbles. Our life will be back to normal by the fall, Bonnie Henry tells us.
While it has been terrible living with the pandemic, a few good things have come out of it that I hope will continue.
Zooming and FaceTiming with friends and families:
My husband and I live in a rural ranch community, a five-hour drive north of Vancouver. Our neighbours on our street are our friends who are like a family. When the Covid-19 restrictions told us we couldn't visit one another in person, that was very hard. No Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners together. No more visits to local pubs and restaurants. Just a lot of phone calls and texting.
But to our delight, our families and friends started taking advantage of the virtual technology to connect with us. We also felt the need to communicate frequently with our 90 something in-laws in England, our cousins in Korea and our niece and nephew in Ontario.
When we are connected virtually, there is no difference between 100 yards and 1000 miles. We have been experiencing one common threat together; the deadly contagious virus, Covid-19. We became closer by our need to check in on one another like never before.
By last fall, I belonged to two wonderful groups of women that met weekly online. These women have been a gift to me during this difficult time.
One is comprised of five friends, including me, who lived and worked together in Yellowknife over a decade ago. Only one of us lives in Yellowknife now. The other four live in Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver and Winnipeg. Without the pandemic, this group would not exist and it has been a source of support, encouragement, laughter and love throughout these months.
Same with another group I was invited to join. This one is of five Korean Canadian women in the Vancouver area, except for me. Once again, this group would not have happened but for the pandemic and it’s been a God send. Truly inspirational and empowering group of women.
Would these non-conventional connecting opportunities continue after the pandemic? Perhaps.
Doctors' visits by phone:
Throughout the pandemic, my entire family has had doctor visits by phone. Some may not like this mode of doctor visits, but we love it. Unless the doctor has to see you and examine you in person, there is no need for person-to-person contact.
Initial consultation about an ailment or prescription renewals can be done by phone very quickly. Often the doctor has to order tests or diagnostic images (x-rays) for more information on your situation anyway. So for straightforward consultations, phone visits work perfectly.
I hope this option continues even after the pandemic. Doctors and patients had been hesitant to meet this way before the pandemic, but now that we've all seen that they can work, why not keep the option?
Booking lab appointments and diagnostic imaging services online:
Being able to book lab appointments online is even more brilliant than visiting a doctor by phone. It eliminates the need to wait in line, sometimes for hours at our local hospital lab.
I don't know if this service was in the works before the pandemic. Perhaps it's been available in other regions but it became available in our area during the pandemic, and I would love this new option to continue as well.
The lab technician at our local hospital was surprised that online booking is not as popular as it should be. It will take time. Hopefully, when the word spreads about its benefit, more people will use it.
Attending church services online:
My fellow worshippers at the church are counting the days until we can all gather in person for the Sunday service. They can hardly wait. But I've enjoyed worshipping on zoom.
Our church membership is small so we can see everyone on one page of the screen. The Reverend preaches from the church with one person choir along with the pianist.
The Reverend also emails the order of service on Wednesdays, including the scriptures to be covered for the coming Sunday. It gives me a chance to read the scriptures in advance, which I couldn't do before. It's marvellous.
I know we will go back to the in-person service, and that will be nice too, but I am enjoying the Sunday services online for now. I like not having to drive back and forth and yet, still, take in the full depth of worship for an hour every Sunday.
Potential for the post-pandemic future in health care services:
I'm excited about what the future will bring post-pandemic, with all the collective virtual experiences we have had, especially in healthcare services.
For many years, our health care systems tried to connect people and services virtually, whether by telephone or online. I know this from having been a Minister of Health many years ago.
There had always been resistance on both sides for various reasons. I hope that we will keep and expand some of the virtual health care services we used through the pandemic.
We now know we don't have to travel for meetings and consultations with health care providers. We can get a lot done online or by phone without burning fuels and wasting time and money.
This would revolutionize the health care delivery system, I am excited about that possibility. That would be one incredible thing to come out of the pandemic.
