West Vancouver

Statutory holiday: Labour Day (the first Monday in September)

First day of Autumn
Even though the first day of Fall is in September, this month feels like another summer month in Vancouver. The weather continues to be sunny and fairly dry, yet the locals continue to be outside as much as possible to enjoy the long days and good weather. After a two-month summer vacation, the children go back to school at the beginning of September and most after-school activities and sports also resume in September. From late August to mid-September all the shopping malls are busy with people preparing for the “Back to School” rush. (Unfortunately, not in this year.) Life really gets fast again for everyone. Many businesses and offices start working on new projects and working longer hours again after the slow days of summer. However, despite the busy work and school schedules, there are many events that happen in September, some of which celebrate the coming of fall on the Fall Equinox (Sept 20 or 21).
The Southlands neighbourhood hosts a Country Fair in September which has pony rides, petting farm, games, horse entertainment, silent auction, used book/toy sale, food, free activities, and more.
The west side neighbourhood of Kerrisdale also hosts Kerrisdale Days which feature live music, clowns, face painting, rides and amazing sidewalk sales at all the boutiques along West 41st Avenue. Also in the west side, Dunbar Village holds its annual Harvest Festival during this month with live music, activities for adults and kids plus games and giveaways from the local stores. The Wesbrook neighbourhood at UBC holds their Wesbrook Village Festival every September with a free barbecue, live music, rock-climbing wall and kids’ zone.
The Mount Pleasant neighbourhood hosts the Autumn Shift Festival which brings live entertainment, shopping, food and fun to the streets – they even close Main street to vehicles so that there is more room for the celebration.
West Vancouver holds its annual Coho Festival on the second Sunday in September and it features their famous Coho Salmon Barbecue, pancake breakfast, the Coho Garden, Kids Park, Main Stage, and the Squamish Nation Village.
Another popular event is the Luxury & Supercar Weekend which takes place in VanDusen Gardens and showcases the very best in rare, classic and modern supercars, high fashion, watches and jewelry and is accompanied by the best specialty foods, wines and spirits.
For those feeling homesick for movies from Korea, the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) is a great way to see over 400 films from more than 70 countries screened over 16 days in late September and early October. The international movies are shown in the original languages with English subtitles.
Finally, the GranFondo Bicycle race takes place every September. This race is Canada’s premier cycling event and hundreds of competitors ride 122 km from Sea to Sky on a dedicated highway lane from downtown Vancouver to Whistler.
